Spring/Summer 2010 Fashion Commentary: Thank heavens – colors are back!

May 2, 2010

Last fall and winter were uncertain times. The developed world was still reeling from the financial crisis, unemployment numbers continued to increase each month as a total percentage of the population, and people everywhere were suffering from either real loss or the fear of the other shoe dropping. Of course, there were some bright spots, but the mood was largely subdued. And as a result, contemporary styling was characterized by grays, lavendars, and other understated patterns.

Spring and summer 2010 is a different story. We have come out of the dreariness of winter and we see that Government and private sector actions have mitigated the blow from the economic crisis, job loss is slowing and even reversing, and many of us are beginning to feel resolve if not relief. And that is why colors are back.

This season will be remembered for bright, saturated colors that say “Life is meant to be lived again!” Look for solid-color cotton trousers and striped shirts in different shades of blue, red, pink, green, and yellow. Also, the most confident dressers will color coordinate garments from their hat to their shoes. Men, in particular, are color-coordinating garments more and more and this season will help sartorially resplendent men scratch that itch.

So when you walk by a well-living gentleman with bright green trousers and a white polo shirt on this season, you may hear a faint echo of George Costanza’s voice saying “I’m back baby!”
